This old Sorby steel back dovetail saw is marked on the spine 'I&H Sorby, Sheffield' along with the hanging sheep logo / golden fleece logo.
The person who sold us this saw said the tool belonged to his grandad who was 'Leslie George Hyland. He was born in 1902 and died in 1982: He became a master wheelwright and worked on the Lord Mayor’s State Coach. During the 2nd World War he was asked to make and supply stretchers to the Army'.
It is difficult to date this saw, we believe this I&H Sorby saw probably dates to some time in the 1800's; the I&H Sorby tool making ran from about 1830 - 1920.
A real tactile piece of history.
