Hand planes have been common place in woodworking for centuries, starting first as wooden planes and then evolving through transitional planes, infill planes and metal planes. During the late 1800's through to the 1940's the metal hand plane went through a mass innovation process as tool makers and manufacturers began attempting to redesign and improve upon wooden planes in the form of metal planes.
Out of this process came plane designs which have gone on to be classics and are still made in the same and similar models today. Some of the designs which came out did not survive the years. The old manufactuer makes include Stanley, Edward Preston, Union, Record, Sorby, Marples, GTL, Woden and more.
A number of these old hand planes have seen a revival in fairly recent years with a number of makers and manufacturers redesigning the old classic hand planes and putting a modern twist on them. Some of the current and more recent makers / brands are Veritas (Canada), Stanley, Clifton (UK), Lie Nielsen (US) and Kunz (Germany).
We stock a wide range of vintage, secondhand hand planes which range from modern planes and specialist planes through to rare planes and antique planes. We also stock different types and makes of old spokeshaves and cabinet scrapers.
